Ambigram Generator

Type a word or a name, or two of them. Turn the result upside down and it still reads. Every style is drawn at once and sorted by how clearly your words read both ways.

Best styles for your word, most readable first

How to make an ambigram

  1. Type a word or a name in the first box. Letters a to z work; spaces and numbers are left out.
  2. For a two-word ambigram, type a second word with the same number of letters in the upside-down box.
  3. Look through the styles. They're sorted by readability, and on a computer you can hover over one to see it upside down.
  4. Click a style to open it large, press Rotate 180° to check the other reading, then download the PNG or copy a link to share it.

Two words or two names in one design

Type a second word in the upside-down box and the design reads your first word normally and the second one when it's turned around: love and hate, angel and demon, or two names for a couple's tattoo. Both words need the same number of letters. Below every result the generator suggests words that flip well with yours, which helps when a word doesn't read cleanly on its own. Why some words make better ambigrams

A rotational ambigram works when each letter, turned upside down, can pass for the letter at the opposite end of the word. Some pairs do that almost by themselves:

Words built from pairs like these read cleanly in almost every style. Letters with long tails or unusual shapes, like f, g, j and k, are harder, so words with several of them look more stylized. If your word doesn't read well, try a shorter form, a nickname or a different style.

Ambigram tattoos

Ambigrams are popular as tattoos because they work from two directions: one word for you and one for the person facing you, or a name that reads the same when your arm is turned. Our ambigram tattoo generator has tattoo word ideas and tips for taking a design to your artist, and the name ambigram generator is set up for one name or two.

What is an ambigram?

An ambigram is a word or design that can be read in more than one orientation. The most common kind, which this generator makes, reads the same after a 180° turn. The word was coined by cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter in 1983. Read more in what is an ambigram.

FAQ

Is this ambigram generator free?

Yes. You can make as many ambigrams as you like and download them as PNG images. There's no account and no sign-up.

Can I use these ambigrams for a tattoo?

Yes. Download the PNG and take it to your tattoo artist. Most artists redraw the lines so they hold up on skin, so treat the design as a starting point and check it reads both ways before you book.

How do two-word ambigrams work?

Type a second word in the upside-down box. The design reads your first word normally and the second word when it's turned 180 degrees, like Love and Hate or two names. If you only have one word, the generator suggests partner words that flip well with it.

Why do both words need the same number of letters?

Each letter shape does two jobs: it's a letter of the first word one way up and a letter of the second word the other way up. So the two words need the same number of letters. Try a nickname or a different spelling if they don't match.

Which style should I choose?

The styles are sorted by how clearly your word reads both ways, so start at the top. Gothic and blackletter styles are the classic ambigram look, serif styles are cleaner, and script styles are more delicate.

Can I use a design for a logo or merchandise?

Designs are free for personal use, including tattoos. For a logo, product or anything you sell, email hello@ambigramgenerator.net first.
